Try something new this Valentine’s day. Serve your special someone breakfast in bed! It easy, doesn’t cost you anything (You probably have all the ingredients in the house already) and gives you the cutesy bonding moment with your loved one. And everyone can do these things. Guys can cook for their girls, girls can cook for their guys and kids can cook these for their parents. So have a happy Valentine’s day and let’s start cooking.

1. Passion Toast

The idea is to toast a heart pattern on bread. You just need to cut out a heart pattern in a slice of bread. We usually use the slices at the end of the loaf since they hold their shape better when cut. Place this pattern on top of a bread slice you want toasted and place under your oven’s top broiler. It’ll also work if you have an overn toaster with a heating element at the top. Watch until the bread gets toasted to your desired level of toastiness. You should be able to use the pattern for several pieces of bread, until it gets too burned for further use.

Serve the toast as you would usually serve toasted bread, with eggs and ham or bacon, and jam or butter.

2. Enamored Egg in a Basket

Cut out a heart shape in a slice of bread. In a hot pan, put a little butter and place the bread in the pan. Break an egg into the heart shaped cutout of the bread.

Serve it with ketchup, may and of course ham or even better, bacon!

3. Forever French Toast

With a pair of kitchn scissors, cutout heart shapes from slices of bread. In a bowl mix some eggs, milk and cinnamon powder. Dip the bread slices in the batter and cook in a medium hot pan with a little butter until golden brown.

Serve with syrup or honey.

4. Fall for you Fried Egg

Fold some aluminum foil into strips and form into heart shaped molds. In a pan heat some butter and place the mold in the pan. Crack an egg into the mold and cook to your desired doneness. Always use tongs to handle the aluminum foil. It gets hot and you’ll burn your fingers if you touch them with bare hands.

Serve with toast or pancakes.

5. Affection Omelette

Use aluminum foil to create a heart shaped mold. You’l need to make it bigger than the one we used in #5 above so it’ll hold more eggs. Place the mold in a hot pan with butter and pour in a mixture of beaten eggs, grated cheese and chopped chives.

Serve with toast, french toast or pancakes.

6. Happiness Ham

Cut out heart shapes in ham slices and fry in a little butter. How easy is that! It also works with spam

Serve with ketchup, toasted bread or pancakes.

7. Caring Carrots

Carve heart shaped slices from a carrot and use in a salad. Some people may find it difficult to make thin slices. No worries, just poach the thick carrot sliced in water and they’ll be soft enough. Be careful when using a knife, you might cut yourself specially when trying to carve a hard vegetable like carrots.

Serve in a salad.

8. Romantic Chocolate

With aluminum foil create thin strips and form into heart shaped molds or letters if you like. Place the molds on top of a plate rubbed with a bit of butter. This is to prevent the chocolate from sticking to the plate. Melt some chocolate in a double boiler and pour over the molds. Place in the freezer until the chocolate sets then remove the molds. You can use any type of chocolate bar, without any nuts or fillings. We used a bar of milk chocolate. It was quite soft but we just placed it in the freezer until serving time.

Serve with vanilla ice cream.

9. “Hearty” Steak

Steak for breakfast? Sure, why not! This one is a bit tricky. We wanted to be able to get a big piece of steak in a heart shape but as it turns out, not all cuts are suited for it. What you can do is just cut out a heart shape in the part of the steak that’s all meat. Don’t include any large fat layers as these will cause your heart shape to distort. Then just cut the remaining pieces and fry along with the main heart shape. It’s heart shape steak with steak strips. :-) If you panfry it, fry some potato slices in the remaining fat from the fried steak. Yum!

Serve with a salad and potato slices.

10. Lovey Dovey Pancakes

You’ll need a plastic squeeze bottle and some pancake batter mix. Make the pancake batter and place into the plastic squeeze bottle. In a medium hot nonstick pan make your heart shapes by squeezing the pancake mix onto the pan. The trick is to make your outlines and letters first. Once they’re almost cooked you can start filling in your outlines. This will make the outlines and letters look darker since they cook longer. Don’t forget, when making letters, the letters should be written as a mirror image since you’ll be flipping the pancake later.

Serve with syrup or honey and ham or bacon.

Enjoy!

Everybody loves ice cream! It’s great to have it in cups, cones or sandwiches! It just needs a bit of creativity. Just yesterday after a heavy lunch some friends were talking about dessert. Mark said “I still have some vanilla ice cream in the office fridge.” Yna, our contributing baker girl said “I don’t want plain ice cream, let’s go to the convenience store to see what else there is.” And voila! We have this … Something that was all too simple to make, but definitely yummy!

And this is something you and your friends and family can play around with … have different flavors of ice cream, different bun types and different toppings. Making it is almost as much fun eating it!

There’s nothing better than pork ribs. Here’s a twist to it. It has crispy skin and tender meat. That way, each person can get a a whole rib cut (or two).

Ingredients:

A half slab of pork ribs (or any even cut of pork with the skin on)

2 tbsp vinegar

1 cup salt

aluminum foil

Procedure:

1. Cut a shallow crisscross pattern on the skin using a sharp knife. Try not to break through the skin.
2. Create a “tray” around the pork using the aluminum foil. This is so you can spread the salt all the way to the edge of the skin and to keep the meat from drying out.
3. Drizzle the vinegar over the skin.
4. Cover the skin with an even layer of salt. This helps keep the skin dry so that it will be easier to crisp later.
5. Place the pork in a 300 degree Fahrenheit oven for 1.5 to 2 hours
6. Take the pork out of the oven, remove the salt crust and place on an oven tray.
7. Place under the broiler to crisp the skin. This may take from 15 to 30 minutes. Keep checking on the pork as the skin may over crisp and burn.

Enjoy!

3 packets of lettuce (any kind will do)

6 tomatoes

2 Cucumbers

2 small carrots

2 onions

1 Can of any kind of fish in brine or oil (milkfish, tuna, salmon, etc.)

1 wedge of any hard cheese (parmesan, edam, cheddar, etc.)

Balsamic Vinegar

Olive Oil

A bottle of ready to use vinaigrette

2 lemons

salt

pepper

Procedure:

Cut the lettuce up into bite size pieces

Cut the tomatoes into circular slices

Peel and cut the cucumbers into cubes

Peel and cut the carrots into matchstick size slices

For the fish, just open the can and warm the contents in a sauce pan. This is just to avoid having solid pieces of fat in case the can’s been in cold storage.

You have a couple of dressing options. You can prepare a simple dressing by mixing 3 parts olive oil to 1 part balsamic vinegar and a squeeze of lemon. You can also add salt and pepper to taste. Or you can just use the ready to use vinaigrette.

Just place the cheese on the side and place a vegetable peeler beside it. Diners can just peel slices off the cheese onto their plate.

Place the ingredients in separate containers. It’ll be up to the diners to assemble their own plates.

Presentation

Just place all the prepped ingredient containers in a table and let your guests serve themselves. This gives an element of fun, conversation and interaction making the meal more interesting and enjoyable.

Enjoy!

And puppy says “Great for humans, but can you make a doggie salad bar next?”

This is a simple recipe. But I like it because it’s also a bonding recipe. It’s something the whole family can get involved with. You can cook it as a fun activity with your kids and family on a lazy weekend afternoon. The kids can help with cooking on the stove, since it’s simple enough to do. And they’ll have a blast customizing their eggs with different garnishes.

And it’s not just cooking for kids by the way. I’ve had friends from work cluster around the stove giving suggestions and trying out their own stuff. Like scrambling the eggs, or buttering the toast beforehand, or other stuff like that. This is a very flexible recipe and doesn’t require exact measurements so you can experiment and have fun cooking it.

The recipe is just for one serving. Multiply the ingredients with how many people are going to eat. And make sure you have a few extra. Some people may eat more than one.

Main:

1/2 tbsp of butter , margarine or cooking oil

1 slice of Bread

1 slice of ham

1 Egg

Grated cheese (Cheddar or Edam, or any of your favorite cheeses will do)

Garnishes / toppings:

Ketchup

Mustard

Mayonnaise

1 slice of bread (for the top part if you’re making a closed sandwich)

Alfalfa sprouts

Lettuce

Procedure :

Cut the bread in such a way as you get an inner part and an outer part like the image above.
Then cut some ham that’s about the same size as the inner piece of bread and cook the ham.

Place your pan over medium heat and add the butter (or oil).
Place the outer bread in the pan.
Then crack the egg in the middle of the outer bread.

Add the grated cheese on top of the egg.
Then add the slice of cooked ham on top of the cheese.

Place the inner bread on top of the ham.
Cook for about two to three minutes or until the egg is solid at the bottom.
The time will depend on how hot your pan is so check for doneness every half minute.
Turn the bread over to toast the bottom for 30 secs to a minute.

Time to garnish. You can let your kids place anything they want on top of the egg/bread.
This is the fun part.

Or top it with lettuce, ketchup, mustard and mayo.
Then top with an extra piece of bread making it a regular sandwich.

Cooking is fun! And so is eating! Well,, I guess that depends on who’s cooking, right? Anyway, while most of us aren’t professional chefs, there’s a lot of goodies we can easily make that are fun to do.

Cooking can be a good experience to help friends and family bond together. Cooking pancakes or making sandwiches with your kids make good memories. “Look, I’ll make a pancake shaped like the letter A”.

Even when the dish doesn’t actually turn out right, the process itself is something good to remember. In fact, a lot of attempts at making food I remember the most are the ones that turn out really crappy.

Like there was a time in college when a bunch of us visited a friend’s house to play cards. We plowed through all the leftovers they had, plus several bags of chips quite quickly. With no more food, a friend decided to cook a can of corned beef. Everyone said “Nah! that’s not going to last. We’ll all finish it in less than a minute.”. So he says he’ll make it spicy. We replied “That’s going to make it even better.” And hearing this, he stir fries the corned beef with some chopped onions and garlic and a HELL of a lot of chili pepper.

Sure it was good, but a single spoonful needed a who;e can of soda or beer to get the spicy edge off. We did manage to finish it but it lasted on the table until we left a few hour later.

So here’s to all of you out there. May you all have fun cooking experiences all your lives. I’m sure you’ll get a few ideas off this site.
