Egg In A Basket

admin, September 20, 2014

This is a simple recipe.  But I like it because it’s also a bonding recipe.  It’s something the whole family can get involved with.  You can cook it as a fun activity with your kids and family on a lazy weekend afternoon.  The kids can help with cooking on the stove, since it’s simple enough to do.  And they’ll have a blast customizing their eggs with different garnishes.

And it’s not just cooking for kids by the way.  I’ve had friends from work cluster around the stove giving suggestions and trying out their own stuff.  Like scrambling the eggs, or buttering the toast beforehand, or other stuff like that.  This is a very flexible recipe and doesn’t require exact measurements so you can experiment and have fun cooking it.

The recipe is just for one serving.  Multiply the ingredients with how many people are going to eat.  And make sure you have a few extra.  Some people may eat more than one. :-)

Cut the bread in such a way as you get an inner part and an outer part like the image above.
Then cut some ham that’s about the same size as the inner piece of bread and cook the ham.

Place the inner bread on top of the ham.
Cook for about two to three minutes or until the egg is solid at the bottom.
The time will depend on how hot your pan is so check for doneness every half minute.
Turn the bread over to toast the bottom for 30 secs to a minute.

Time to garnish.  You can let your kids place anything they want on top of the egg/bread.
This is the fun part.

You can put alfalfa sprouts then some more ham and ketchup and mustard and serve it as an open faced sandwich.

Or top it with lettuce, ketchup, mustard and mayo.
Then top with an extra piece of bread making it a regular sandwich.

Enjoy!  I’m sure everyone will enjoy making it as well as eating it.
