A Simple Salad Bar

Making your own salad bar is a simple and fun way of serving a meal when you’re entertaining guests at home.  This could be served for lunch or dinner.  It’s tasty and healthy and the recipe is extremely flexible.   You’re encouraged to add or subtract ingredients and modify the procedures as you see fit.  Experiment and use this as a learning experience.  You really can’t go wrong with this type of salad.  This serves about 4 to 6 people.

Ingredients:

  • 3 packets of lettuce (any kind will do)
  • 6 tomatoes
  • 2 Cucumbers
  • 2 small carrots
  • 2 onions
  • 1 Can of any kind of fish in brine or oil (milkfish, tuna, salmon, etc.)
  • 1 wedge of any hard cheese (parmesan, edam, cheddar, etc.)
  • Balsamic Vinegar
  • Olive Oil
  • A bottle of ready to use vinaigrette
  • 2 lemons
  • salt
  • pepper

Procedure:

  • Cut the lettuce  up into bite size pieces
  • Cut the tomatoes into circular slices
  • Peel and cut the cucumbers into cubes
  • Peel and cut the carrots into matchstick size slices

For the fish, just open the can and warm the contents in a sauce pan.  This is just to avoid having solid pieces of fat in case the can’s been in cold storage.

You have a couple of dressing options.  You can prepare a simple dressing by mixing 3 parts olive oil to 1 part balsamic vinegar and a squeeze of lemon.  You can also add salt and pepper to taste. Or you can just use the ready to use vinaigrette.

Just place the cheese on the side and place a vegetable peeler beside it.  Diners can just peel slices off the cheese onto their plate.

Place the ingredients in separate containers.  It’ll be up to the diners to assemble their own plates.

Presentation

Just place all the prepped ingredient containers in a table and let your guests serve themselves.  This gives an element of fun, conversation and interaction making the meal more interesting and enjoyable.
